Down the path and back
I photographed this family of three at Coyote Pond Park in Lincoln in September 2026. In these frames the park is a paved path winding through dry golden hills, with oaks on the slopes, willows, a wooden bridge and a pond lined with reeds. Houses sit along the ridge in the distance. The sun is low in many of them, and it lays long shadows across the path.
The first frame is the three of them walking away from me down the path, their son swinging between his parents by the hands, his braid down his back and his feet off the ground. Later his parents hold hands on a curve of the path while he runs back toward them, small and out of focus between their arms. In a close frame both their hands rest on his shoulders, her dark nails and ring against his grey T-shirt, with the sun breaking in at the edge.
Many frames are of the parents together. They kiss against a wooden railing in front of a wall of willow leaves. On the bridge he lifts her off the boards with one heeled sandal kicked up behind her, and they laugh as they look at each other.
By the pond they stand close and smile at the camera, with reeds, still water and the dry hills behind them. In the last photograph here he holds her up against a wide, streaky sky while she cups his face in both hands.
