Out ahead on his own
Two parents, a toddler and a baby, photographed in Roseville in September 2026. Three of these frames are on a paved path, with a wooden fence along parts of it. The other three are in dry grass and by the water. In every one of them somebody is walking, holding a hand or holding the baby.
The set opens on the father and the toddler, seen from behind. They walk away from the camera, and the boy reaches up to hold his father’s hand. The sun is low enough to lay long shadows across the path. In two other frames the parents hold hands behind him while he is out ahead by himself: once on the path, once in the grass in front of a big tree.
The baby is in three frames, held by the mother each time. On the path the parents look back over their shoulders, smiling, and the baby shows only as a hand on the mother’s shoulder and a bare foot at her waist. In the grass the mother sits with the baby on her lap, a small gold bow in the baby’s topknot. By the water she holds the baby against her chest under the low branches of a tree. The baby’s romper is the same pale green as the mother’s dress.
No frame here has all four of them in it, and neither child looks at the camera in any of them. One child is on his feet and the other is being held.
