This year, as it actually was

I’m Sofia, a documentary photographer in Roseville. Children are a different size by spring, and the light is gone before five. One short session in the last light of the day keeps both — 45+ edited images in a private online gallery, yours to download and print. $200 in all; $50 holds your date and the rest is due on the day.

No one has to sit still

I give the kids something to do rather than somewhere to stand, and photograph what actually happens. We make time for a family group photograph too, alongside the in‑between moments.

Your place or mine

Your own backyard, a park you already love — Maidu, Mahany, Johnson‑Springview in Rocklin — or a spot I'll suggest. Entirely your call, and it costs nothing either way.

Yours to keep, and to send

Frame one, send one in the card. The gallery arrives within two weeks of the session.

What these look like

Photographed in Roseville and Sacramento in the same low, late light these holiday sessions are built around.

I always feel completely comfortable and free to be myself when she’s taking photos, which makes such a difference.

How it goes.

01

You pick a date

Pick a weekend and a start time straight from the booking calendar — once you pay the $50 deposit, it’s yours. If you have a spot in mind, add it in your booking notes, or I can recommend one.

02

We shoot for thirty minutes

We meet where you chose, and for half an hour I stay out of the way and photograph what happens. Coats come off for a frame or two; nobody has to hold a smile. The remaining $150 is due on the day.

03

Your gallery arrives

A private online gallery of 45+ edited high-resolution images within two weeks, yours to download, print and send. If you're working to a card deadline, tell me when you book and I'll work to it.

The short days are the good ones

Once the clocks go back, the sun never climbs very high over the valley. The light stays low and soft right through the afternoon, the summer haze has gone, and the bare oaks give you a horizon instead of a wall of green. It is the most flattering light of the year, and it does not last.

Thirty minutes of it, once a year, and it keeps a season nobody can hold on to.

Things people usually ask

Will we get the photos in time for holiday cards?
Your gallery arrives within two weeks of your session, so an early weekend in the run leaves time to order cards and still mail them. Weekends through December 6 still deliver before Christmas, in time for gifts. If you have a date you must hit, tell me when you book and I'll work to it.
Why do holiday sessions start in the early afternoon?
The clocks went back on November 1, so the sun is down in Roseville between 4:43pm and 4:59pm across this run. Sessions start at 2:00pm, 2:45pm, 3:30pm and 4:15pm, so the last one finishes at 4:45pm, as the sun goes.
Can we still have the photographs by Christmas?
A session on or before Sunday, December 6 arrives before Christmas at the usual two weeks. The weekends after that deliver just after it, which still works for the new year and for cards you send in January.
How do I hold a date, and when do I pay?
A $50 deposit holds your date, and the remaining $150 is due on the day of your session. Once the deposit is paid you can move to any other time that is still open. If nothing in the run suits — an unwell child on the last weekend, say — we find a date in the new year between us. A change of plan does not cost you the booking.
What does $200 include?
Thirty minutes of shooting, and 45 or more edited high-resolution images in a private online gallery you can download, print and share. A $50 deposit holds your date and the remaining $150 is due on the day. No hidden session fee on top.
What should we wear?
Layers you'd actually wear. The valley sits around 60 degrees on a November afternoon and a little cooler in December, so a flannel, a knit and boots are usually right, and they photograph far better in low light than summer cottons. I'll send a short styling note once you book. No matching outfits required.
How many people can come?
Everyone is welcome: parents and kids, grandparents, cousins, the whole family. Tell me who’s coming in your booking notes so I can plan the group shots.
Can we bring the dog?
Always yes. Dogs make every session better. (Cats are negotiable.)
What if the weather turns?
We'll watch it together and move your session to another day if we need to — no fee for weather. An overcast November afternoon is often softer and kinder than bright sun, so grey on the forecast is not a reason to cancel.
Where do holiday mini sessions happen?
Outdoors, in the last good light of the day. Your own backyard, a park you already love, or a spot I'll suggest around Roseville, Rocklin and greater Sacramento. Put a location in your booking notes, or leave it to me.
