The last hour of the light

Four kids in one open field, in the last hour before the sun went. There is a short stretch in late August around here when the grass has gone completely gold and the light drops low enough to come through it rather than down onto it. It does not last long once the evenings start pulling in.

Sessions with four children are not calm and I do not try to make them calm. The toddler spent most of it on his father’s shoulders. At one point his dad lifted the baby straight up against an open sky and everybody stopped to watch, which is the sort of thing you cannot ask for and cannot repeat.

The last frame of the evening is all of them walking away from me across the grass, backs turned, nobody posing. That one is usually the one that ends up printed.

That stretch of light is short enough that it is worth booking into rather than hoping for. If you want an evening like this one, the family sessions page has the collections and what each one includes, and the other recent sessions show how a few different evenings have gone.

Family walking away together at golden hour, toddler riding on his father's shoulders
The whole family gathered close, laughing, with the last of the evening light behind them
Father lifting his baby high against an open sky
The family walking off across the grass, backs to the camera
Parents sharing a quiet kiss beneath a bare oak
